  • HOW DO SAFESCAN’S CASH DRAWERS WORK?

Safescan offers high-quality steel cash drawers and point-of-sale safes to meet a range of needs, from occasional traffic to high-volume retail use. How do these products work? Let’s take a look under the hood.

  • WHAT ARE CASH DRAWERS MADE OF?

Modern cash drawers are made of a metal outer casing and a plastic inner tray (or “till”). The till is divided into several compartments for banknotes and coins and is often removable. The drawer’s durability and security depend on the quality of its materials and construction, so be sure to look for one with a thick-gauge steel exterior, shatterproof PVC tray, robust slider mechanism and sturdy lock. All Safescan cash drawers and trays meet these requirements.

  • WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LIGHT, STANDARD AND HEAVY DUTY?

At Safescan, these terms refer not to the drawer’s construction quality—all our cash drawers and trays are manufactured from highest-quality steel and shatterproof PVC to stringent durability and security standards—but to how often you will open and close the cash drawer. Each usage level employs a different slider mechanism, optimized for the amount of traffic it is expected to handle over its lifetime.

  • HOW DO CASH DRAWERS OPEN?

The simplest cash drawers open manually, with a gentle push. More advanced cash drawers can also be controlled by your cash register or receipt printer: plug the drawer into your POS system using the industry-standard RJ12 interface and turn the lock to the “online” position, and the drawer will only open when you touch the button on the register screen or when your printer prints a receipt. (You can also turn the lock to the “manual” position to open it by hand.) Turn the lock to the “locked” position and it won’t budge at all. All Safescan cash drawers provide both electronic and manual control.

  • HOW DOES A 3-POSITION, 4-FUNCTION LOCK WORK?

These locks offer the user maximum flexibility without compromising security. They have three physical positions, corresponding to locked, printer-driven and manual open functions. The locked position actually has two options: you can lock the drawer when it is open or when it is closed. That’s where the fourth function comes from.
In Safescan’s SD cash drawers, the locks work slightly differently; these drawers also have an “easy-push” feature when the lock is in the online position. That means you can open the till manually in two ways: by turning the lock to position 3, or with a simple push when the lock is in position 2.
