In the middle of the historic heart of The Hague and directly across from one of the Royal palaces there is a remarkable tobacconist. At the Royal Dutch Tobacco and Souvenir Trading Company you can do more than just buy a ‘simple’ smoke. Manager Ramon Mescher: “The store is set up like the café-tabacs in France and Italy. You can drink a coffee, look at works by promising artists and buy great souvenirs.”
The store is important to the community. “Locals and shopkeepers exchange the latest news in here in the morning. But we also get a lot of tourists; people who are looking for real Delft ware, because we are an official dealer of the Royal Porceleyne Fles.” Despite royal porcelain and having a palace for a neighbour the Queen has not shown up yet. Ramon: “Not yet at any rate. But Churchill and the well-know philanthropist Carnegie have smoked a cigar here in the last century – the premises have been used as a cigar store since 1885. When we were refurbishing we even found an advertisement sign from those days behind a large metal plate!”
Goodbye forged money
Cigars, cigarettes, souvenirs, newspapers and magazines have more in common than the attractive location they are sold at: they are all items that are usually paid for in cash. “There is always the chance that there is a forged note in there, especially if you consider that tourists are not very familiar with the euro and frequently get taken for a ride.” To avoid forged notes getting into the till Ramon has chosen to use the Safescan 125. “A terrific machine because you have a definitive answer regarding authenticity within a second. Put your note in and you’re done. Since we started using the 125 we have literally not accepted a single forged note.”
Perfect track
A second Safescan solution seems to stop congestions at the till. “We work in different shifts. And every employee is responsible for his or her own till. That used to lead to problems sometimes because when you changed shifts the till would of course have to be cashed up. A very time-consuming job” Besides: “Because of the hurry it happened sometimes that the count wasn’t completely correct. To get rid of those bottlenecks we now have the Safescan 6100. A high speed money counter which is suitable for coins as well as notes. The device requests the coins and notes in the proper order so mistakes are now definitely a thing of the past.
